The Cheshire and Merseyside ISTC is a three storey, standalone building providing orthopaedic care facilities within the grounds of the Halton General Hospital in Runcorn, Cheshire. The building was constructed as part of the Department of Health’s plan to increase the current NHS treatment capacity.
The ground floor contains out-patient consulting rooms and a physiotherapy treatment area together with an imaging centre, which includes MRI, CT and X-ray. In-patient accommodation totalling 44 beds and support facilities such as catering are provided on the first floor. The operating suite with four theatres, recovery areas, clinical administration and staff support accommodation are located on the second floor.
The building used fast-track construction methods and off site pre-fabrication to meet the tight programme requirements. The whole process, from inception to completion, was carried out within 18 months.
The external appearance provides the users with a health facility that is welcoming, reassuring and accessible and is a twenty-first century healthcare facility embracing best practice, innovative design and the latest technology and I.T.
The new building upgrades the image of the existing hospital providing a facility that has a tangible impact on the level of healthcare provided by the Halton NHS Hospital Trust.
