Bexhill High School

A pioneering new model for secondary level teaching and learning in England has shaped the design of this BSF One School Pathfinder project in Bexhill, East Sussex.

Incorporated into the design are home zones for up to 90 pupils, arranged over two levels, around a central heart space. These are multifunctional areas created from unused circulation space; they will be used for dining, informal group activities and breakout space. The school is enclosed by an ETFE roof, which allows natural light to penetrate throughout the building. The heart also enables a whole school assembly and in combination with some of the specialist areas, will also be used for an extended schools programme and community use.

The building uses very little primary energy and meets the government’s 60% carbon reduction target through a strategy of lighting and an innovative acoustic natural ventilation solution. This has avoided the need for mechanical systems within the large learning zones and has contributed towards a Very Good BREEAM rating.

A separate Vocational Skills Centre has also been delivered under this SECE framework (now IESE) appointment.
