Devereux Architects have been appointed by the Irish developers McAleer & Rushe to transform the ageing 1960’s Newgate Shopping Centre and former Swallow Hotel, replacing them with new offices, leisure facilities, retail outlets and three hotels.
Following extensive meetings with English Heritage and Newcastle City Council, designs have been developed to ensure that the scheme is in context with Grainger Town and is complimentary to the existing street hierarchy.
Contemporary in design, the new mixed-use development opens up the city block by creating a new Chare off Newgate Street, which gives access to the 165-bed four-star hotel, the 250-bed two-star and the 153-bed one-star hotel. The line of Newgate Street will also be brought forward to reflect the original medieval curve. At ground level this will provide exciting new retail outlets, which will revitalise this area of the city.
David Slater, Newcastle City Council’s executive director of environment and regeneration, said: “We welcome this scheme which will bring new life to a core part of the city and encourage future development. It will complement the work we are doing with our partners Capital Shopping Centres to transform Eldon Square. It is significant that we are now beginning to see the first signs of new investment coming forward during the recession.”
Planning consent was approved for this significant project in 2010.
