Believed to be the largest residential PassivHaus scheme in the UK, this 28 unit bungalow scheme at the Racecourse Estate in Houghton-le-Spring will help homeowners save hundreds of pounds per year in energy bills.
Working closely with developer Gentoo, Devereux Architects have designed a new housing scheme that adheres to the PassivHaus standard: a system that allows the sun, internal heat sources and ventilation to heat the home. In comparison with traditional buildings, a PassivHaus produces 80% less carbon emissions.
This project will be both PassivHaus and CHS certified. The design achieves a 75% reduction in space heating compared to building regulations and a level four rating under the code.
PassivHaus represents a major step toward the zero carbon targets set out by the government for all new houses built after 2016 by maximising the principle of least lifecycle cost and low maintenance.
