Students Union Building, Brunel University

As a pilot project at the heart of the University’s ten year masterplan, this building was designed to establish a focal point for the campus.

The project was a complex, multi-phased refurbishment and extension of a 1960’s building, tailored around an operational environment. At the heart of the building a new atrium has been created from a redundant external courtyard using an ETFE roofing system, allowing natural light to penetrate throughout the building. A new mezzanine balcony and feature staircase provides a link up to first floor level to the newly refurbished refectory and ‘Hub Bar’. At ground floor the atrium is bordered by the ‘Academy’ nightclub and ‘Locos Bar’, each with its own distinctive style.

A new extension has been added to the existing south façade, incorporating ground floor retail units with terrace above, sheltered by a large oversailing roof and brise soleil. This provided much needed new retail accommodation whilst solving a long-standing solar gain issue to the upper level.
