SGDP Building, King's College London

The scientific goal of the social, genetic & developmental psychiatry centre is to develop a greater understanding of common psychiatric disorders using genetic and environmental strategies.

Four levels of research suites and seminar space are located around a central atrium space, which provides natural light and a focus for communal activities. A suite of Cat 2 laboratories designed to Wellcome Trust standards is incorporated at lower ground level. Formal and informal meeting areas are designed to overlook the central atrium to stimulate interaction between research groups.

The building envelope is assembled entirely from high quality, factory finished components, which enabled rapid construction and a distinctive contemporary image. This also reduced waste and allowed for a more sustainable construction process. The end result is a research building of the highest standards. This has assisted the Institute in asserting its role as one of the leading facilities for Psychiatric research and study within an international context.

The design adopts a number of sustainable measures to address key environmental and building performance issues. This includes the use of the building’s thermal mass for night time cooling. Additionally external, automated solar control blinds are incorporated along the south and west elevations to reduce solar gain.
