SEN, Bexhill High School

As part of the new 1650 pupil secondary school an ASD/SEN (Autistic Spectrum Disorder / Special Education Needs) Learning Pod is integrated into the main body of Bexhill High School.

The Pod is part of the inclusive design concept with full access to all areas, which includes the all-weather sports pitches.

Devereux Architects had a series of design development sessions with the school which highlighted the key criteria of the brief required to address the needs this special kind of learning environment. Classrooms have been carefully arranged so that the teaching staff can employ different one to one or group teaching methods. A low sensory stimulus environment created by bare walls and floors has been decorated in pastel green tones. Suitable vinyl flooring has been specified for some of the rooms using a light wood grain colour, while the remaining rooms are carpet tiled. Indirect light from the school’s central heart space in the circulation areas of the Pod, work as libraries for the pupils.

The end result is a specialist learning environment for up to 22 pupils provides a range of teaching facilities including art rooms, physio rooms and quiet rooms. It accommodates adequate supervision of pupils with specific needs with up to four teaching staff and integrated offices. The Learning Pod also includes suitable conveniences such as drinking points, a kitchenette /food serve area, toilets and Part M compliant disabled toilets. A large covered ASD / SEN terrace with direct access to the Learning Pod all at first floor is easily accessible to the Sports Hall and the external pitches.
