Royal Holloway, Sports Centre

The size of Royal Holloway’s campus has allowed the university to develop some of the best sports facilities of any university institution in the London area, and helped build the university’s reputation as a sporting institution of excellence. With this in mind Devereux Architects produced a five phase sports development masterplan for the university.

The completion of phases 1 & 2 has provided the university with a new four court sports hall with changing facilities and a two storey outdoor changing pavilion. This features a terrace overlooking the 1^st team rugby pitch and a double curved, deep overhanging roof, providing weather protection and solar shading. A large underground rainwater storage unit has also been installed.

Once phases three, four and five are completed, the centre will comprise of a sports hall, fitness centre, dance studio, indoor climbing centre, squash courts, floodlit synthetic turf pitch, indoor changing rooms and an outdoor changing pavilion with additional car parking.

The inclusion of all of these facilities on such a small site has necessitated the re-organisation of all of the outdoor pitches, which has been achieved in close co-operation with the Head Groundsman.
