Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research

The University of Exeter and the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E), in partnership with the Peninsula Medical School (PMS) have a shared vision to develop Exeter as a centre for excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical education training and research.

Devereux were appointed in 2011 to design the new Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research (formerly the centre for Research, Innovation and Learning Development (RILD)

The centre will include a medical research facility, part-funded by the Wellcome Trust and Wolfson Foundation, and two floors of laboratories which will focus on research into the treatment of conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Facilities will also include a redeveloped postgraduate education department, a clinical research and training facility, a faculty of health and social work provision with e-learning suites, a suite of seminar and conference facilities and a ground floor café. The new building is linked at both ground and first floor levels to the existing Peninsula College of Dentistry and Medicine.

Having a high profile presence along the busy Barrack Road, the new building will become the visible face of the Hospital and is designed to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Features include vertical timber louvre fins for solar shading, photovoltaic panels, secure cycle storage and showers for cyclists and clinical staff. A highly glazed central ‘hub’, which will form the main entrance area, provides views out and plenty of natural light. Accommodation wings will be faced in masonry, with both a textured and smooth finish. Building materials selected throughout will echo those of the traditional local vernacular.

The new Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research forms part of a phased Masterplan which Devereux Architects have developed to demonstrate how the client’s vision may expand to create a new vibrant and inspirational campus for Research and Training.
