Peninsula Dental School, Devonport

The Peninsular Dental School Clinical Teaching Unit in Devonport is the first purpose built dental education facility in the UK for 30 years. It also forms part of a much wider South West Peninsula Dental School Project spread over a number of sites across the region.

This project focuses only on the Clinical Teaching Unit element that will be located within the Devonport NDC area on a site adjacent to the existing Cumberland Centre. The project includes the design and build of the Unit itself as well as the services that will be provided for both patients and dental students.

The Peninsula Dental School in Devonport contains 43 dental chairs organised in five clusters of eight and three chairs in individual surgeries, dental x-ray, a dental laboratory and teaching facilities. The chair clusters introduce a new concept in dental tuition based on client privacy and dignity whilst maintaining a high level of supervision and client safety.

The external materials, split block and render, reinterpret traditional local stone and stucco to provide a new dental school with a contemporary character.
