Olympia Building, Teesside University

Devereux Architects won the commission in a design competition held in 2003. The building works began on site later in the same year and the building was officially opened on 5th March 2004.

The Olympia Building is a sports science building, a mix of sports facilities and sports research and teaching spaces. At the heart of the building is a six-court multi-purpose sports hall with retractable seating for 100 people. There are two glass backed squash courts with spectator facilities and externally a floodlit artificial hockey pitch.

The teaching and research spaces include biomechanics and physiology laboratories, an environmental chamber and associated seminar and teaching rooms.

One wall of the sports hall is fully glazed which creates a vibrant façade allowing the internal sporting activity to be viewed by all. The glazed façade provides high quality natural light to the play area.
