Monkseaton High School

Monkseaton High School is breaking the rules. Pioneering a new teaching and learning method that pushes the building design beyond the traditionally adhered to views of what a school should look like.

At the heart of the school is a central space combining private learning areas, teaching spaces, social and break out areas as well as two gyms and sports facilities. An open interior, so you can see from one side of the school to the other, creating ‘passive surveillance’ to prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour.

Students with physical needs were discussed and solutions were developed with staff, students and the local authority during the design period. To accommodate their needs a physiotherapy room has been provided with WC, shower and changing facilities. In addition, fire alarm sounders with flashing lights have been installed for those with a hearing impairment.

The building has been positioned in the most sustainable area on site, reducing the effect of heating and cooling. The school has an abundance of sustainable features, including: thermal solar panels, energy efficient lighting and integrated natural ventilation. Not only do these reduce its carbon footprint but also creates an environment that maintains optimum performance levels during the school day.

The school has since been benchmarked independently against five local schools and is considered excellent value at £1400 per sqm, showing that an iconic, high quality new school can be delivered within a modest budget.
