London School Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

Arising from a wider spatial analysis of the School’s principle London site and long-term development goals Devereux Architects enhanced the potential of this Grade II listed building. The practice designed and led this scheme from inception to completion, providing the School with new teaching, research and public spaces, housed within two large redundant courtyards.

The scheme comprises a seven storey freestanding extension in the Northern Courtyard set within a glass three-sided atrium and is linked by pedestrian bridges to the existing Grade II listed building. The design incorporates a basement, lower ground floor with a steel frame structure and a glazed pitched roof. An external service courtyard was retained.

The South Courtyard contains a five storey high structure, surrounded on all sides by a top-lit atria. Areas for teaching and research are located on the lower levels. Above this a new divisible raked auditorium sits in the heart of the courtyard. Raised up by two storeys, this enables the new central pedestrian circulation route to pass underneath it, along the central access of the main building. Above the auditorium sits two floors of research space, enclosed within glass walls, maintaining the openness of the courtyard.

Due to the listed status of the building Devereux Architects were heavily involved with the Planning Department and English Heritage. In particular the internal facades of the courtyard needed to be retained with minimal alteration. This was achieved through maximising floor space by setting it back from existing elevations.

The design has achieved a Very Good BREEAM rating as it incorporates the use of active chilled beams with water from geothermal bores, mixed mode ventilation, a heat recovery system, wind turbine and photovoltaic arrays set within roof glazing. The project was also the only building to be shortlisted for the 2009 Carbon Trust award.

The scheme was completed in May 2009 and was officially opened by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal.
