Horizon Centre - Centre for Education, Innovation and Research

The brief for this project called for a new, exciting and innovative centre of education, learning and research for NHS professionals.

The aim of the redevelopment was to replace the existing medical centre, which contained limited facilities, with a new centre of learning designed loosely around three zones. The design contains a range of flexible learning spaces, seminar and teaching rooms, offices and a café area as well as high tech clinical skills areas and a simulated operating theatre.

A key innovation of the scheme is the integration of technology within the different zones of the centre. This starts within the clinical skills zone, where using a mixture of cutting edge simulators and manikins, alongside the latest in digital recording and display, real life situations are created in a safe and supported environment. Early engagement with DRV (the audio-visual contractors) enabled the individual spaces to be designed with the audio visual needs of the users in mind alongside the equipment they would be using for training.
