Health Services Research Building

Located on the former car park the Health Services Research Building at KCL forms a contemporary addition to this residential street bordering the Institute of Psychiatry campus. The design respects the height, scale and rhythm of the Victorian villas, both adjacent and opposite whilst re-establishing the streetscape. Traditional and contemporary materials blend to suit the nature of the conservation area.

The building provides a new centre, which aims to encourage greater interaction between currently fragmented teams working in inadequate and outmoded facilities around the campus.

The Psychology Department provides a new facility for the Wellcome Trust Anxiety Disorder Research Group previously based in Oxford, as well as the existing accommodation within the Institute. The accommodation comprises Seminar and Group Treatment rooms, Research offices, Laboratories and Ancillary Facilities.

The accommodation is planned over four levels and each department has its own separate entrance. The linear nature of the building is brought to a human scale by replicating the rhythm of five villas, interlinked by glazed screens. A continuous, recessed glazed 'attic storey' extends the full length of the building.

The new facility has proven to be a successful landmark building for vital local and national services.
