Dixons City Academy

Originally a City Technology College, Dixons Academy underwent a major extension and rebuild in 2005. These works created a new entrance, reception area and auditorium space for the academy. This was to generate more space for the academy’s 1200 students aged between 11 and 18.

Incorporated into the new design was an assembly hall seating between 250 – 300 people. The existing CDT area was reorganised to create offices, a staff base, exhibition space, workshops, CAD/CAM areas, CDT and IT teaching spaces. Music, drama and art were rearranged to create new practice rooms, a large music technical classroom as well as a dance and music studio at ground floor level.

A new performing arts suite was also created, which also provides an after hours facility for community use. This space incorporates bleacher style retractable seating, drama practical workshops and drama classrooms.

The college reception area was remodelled to provide a direct link to the catering facilities and exhibition spaces for art, music, dance and drama.

Throughout the process Devereux Architects ensured that all work complied with the latest energy and classroom environmental standards. This promoted a safe, economic and sustainable solution.

After completion Devereux Architects were re-commissioned by the Academy to provide a new standalone teaching block at a construction value of £1.5 million. This new extension provides the extra teaching facilities necessary for the Academy to fully meet its existing curriculum requirements. The building was successfully delivered in September 2009, on time and within budget.
