Devonshire Building, Newcastle University

The Devonshire Building is a flagship development for Newcastle University that embodies a new approach to providing academic facilities.

The building is home to the University’s Institute for Research on the Environment and Sustainability and brings together, under one roof, a number of traditional physical sciences together with e-science and social sciences.

The building provides laboratory and office space for many different departments and represents a cultural change in the university, which is keen to encourage interaction and cross-flow of ideas across departments.

The building design embraces a modern approach to sustainable design, in keeping with its environmental research function. It was the first building of its type to receive an Excellent BREEAM rating, presented by Energy Minister Steven Timms.

The project has won several awards, among them the RICS Renaissance Awards for sustainability and building of the year. In 2005 the project won the Hadrian award as well as the Lord Mayor’s Design award for sustainability.
