Culture Lab, Newcastle University

Culture Lab is the focal point for creative arts practice at Newcastle University. The lab supports the work of researchers and students involved in high level, experimental and multi-disciplinary creative arts projects in a technologically rich and custom designed environment.

Culture Lab was a collaborative project for the Newcastle University, Institute for the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. The total investment value was £4m and the result is the creation of a unique research/performance/gallery/laboratory for the arts, humanities, engineering, technology and sciences.

The facilities include a well equipped and serviced base for research teams, digital film and audio studios, an up to date eight camera optical tracking motion capture system, a green screen and lighting stage as well as various workshop and digital fabrication facilities. There is also a reconfigurable live event’s space, which includes screening facilities and a configurable meeting and seminar room.

The concept is truly innovative and is designed to encourage cross-faculty interdisciplinary collaboration. It encompasses both new and traditional forms of creative expression across an analogue-digital continuum. It is quite fitting therefore that this innovative flagship for research excellence is housed in the Grade II listed Grand Assembly Rooms.

This project was the winner of the 2007 RICS Renaissance Awards for Building Conservation.
