Usworth Sixth Form College

In September 2006, the City of Sunderland College opened its brand new campus Usworth Sixth Form College on Stone Cellar Road in Washington, Tyne and Wear.

The building houses a learning resource centre, a computer learning unit and science laboratories. A raked lecture theatre and multi-purpose seminar and function room with access onto a landscaped roof terrace is located on the upper level of the three storey building.

The design centred on creating an interior space that uses as much natural light as possible. On the upper levels, large openings in the floors allow light to filter to the lower levels and through the glass walls of internal rooms. This benefits teaching and learning as well as providing ventilation to give a light and airy feel to the internal areas. The street is landscaped with trees and also houses an open air café, where staff and students can meet and socialise.

Careful consideration was given to building a college that uses minimal energy and expends low levels of C02. Natural construction materials were used, where possible, to create an environmentally friendly building.

Since its opening the project has won a number of awards. It was the winner of the 2006 landmark awards for the public sector building of the year awards. In 2008 it was the joint winner of the LSC and RIBA Further Education Design Excellence Awards. The project also received a commended sustainability award from the constructing excellence in the built environment awards.
