Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences

The Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences is a joint venture of the King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

Devereux Architects were involved with the design, funding application and procurement of this centre, which provides an interdisciplinary research environment. The centre combines the development of contemporary, high resolution structural, functional and metabolic mapping techniques, with expertise in the definition, diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

The building is split into two component parts: A ground floor clinical suite comprising a dedicated GE 3T Excite II MRI scanner with a GE SIGNA 1.5T neuro-optimised MR system housed in the adjacent Mapother House MR Unit, CT scanner and X-ray facilities. Three levels of research offices, seminar spaces and support facilities are located at upper level.

A significant effort was spent at planning stage to develop a sensitive scheme to meet the conservation led concerns of the neighbourhood.

The result is a contemporary insertion within an historic and imposing group of listed buildings along the Denmark Hill Campus.
