Campus of Ageing & Vitality, Newcastle University

The Campus for Ageing and Vitality is being developed for the Institute of Ageing and Health for Newcastle University on the site of Newcastle General Hospital as part of Newcastle’s Science City initiative.

Devereux Architects were originally commissioned in 2003 to produce a masterplan for the long term development of the old hospital on a tight urban site with many challenging constraints and a very sensitive urban context. The vision for the Campus was to bring together all of the functions of the Institute into a coherent development which would be phased over a number of years and which would become a fitting centre of excellence for research on ageing and health.

Four new buildings, component parts of the masterplan, have also been designed by Devereux Architects with the last building, the Translational Research Building, due for completion at the end of 2011. This new facility links up with the existing Henry Wellcome Laboratory for Biogerentology Research to provide 4,000 sqm of clinical, research and academic accommodation over four storeys. A new pavilion building and cafe within an enclosed courtyard will provide an attractive hub for the campus for people to meet socially and professionally.

The Magnetic Resonance Centre, completed in 2006, involved the design and construction of a 3.0 Tessla scanner suite - the first of it’s kind in the North of England, research facilities, clinical treatment areas, library and common rooms together with a dedicated energy centre.

The Edwardson Building provides main accommodation for the Institute for Ageing and Health and was completed in 2007. It provides four principal components: a significant extension to the Biogerentology Building; a CAT3 Home Office licensed facility for the housing of the University’s Aged Mouse Colony; a home for the Newcastle Brain Tissue Resource; and a small bore PET Scanner Suite.

The Clinical Ageining and Research Unit, completed in 2008, is linked to the Magnetic Resonance Centre and the Translational Research via an atrium. It provides clinical research facilities for study into human movement and performance, neurocardiovascular research, visual perception and bone densiometry as well as seminar rooms, meeting areas and support areas.
