Blackheath Nursery & Preparatory School

Devereux Architects designed an extension to provide enlarged dining, assembly and music facilities within the context of a Grade II listed building. Situated within the conservation area and overlooking Blackheath Common, the extension responds to the constraints and opportunities of the site.

The existing music room was sub-divided to create three new rehearsal and tuition spaces along with a music store, whilst a large new music room / performance space was created within the new extension.

Extensions and improvements to the existing kitchen and stores, together with an enlarged dining hall enable the delivery of an enhanced lunch service. Operating also as a multi-functional hall, this space opens onto a covered external play area – vital to the curriculum delivery for Key Stages 1&2.

Construction work was completed in two phases out of term time, specifically avoiding the need for temporary accommodation as well as minimising disruption.
