The Woodlands, Rotherham Older People’s Mental Health Inpatient Unit is a £16m new extension to facilities at Rotherham General Hospital. The new building provides essential new accommodation, including three new wards with 42 new beds, all single bedroom ensuites, for older patients. The unit will also house shared clinical therapy services and associated administration facilities. This new facility was opened in April.
Swallownest Court, also recently completed will soon be open to adult mental health service users following a £4m investment in refurbished wards. As well as a new purpose-built psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) and section 136 suite.
An opening event for Trust stakeholders, and members of the local community was held last night, providing an opportunity to view the finished facilities for the first time.
Both of these projects, designed by Devereux Architects, are part of Royal Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust’s modernisation programme for adult and older people’s mental health services in Rotherham. The programme aims to deliver high quality accommodation for service users to promote their mental wellbeing and assist their recovery.
Gary Millard, Assistant Director for Adult Inpatient Mental Health Services at the Turst, said: “The refurbishment and newly built PICU represent significant investment in the care and treatment of local adults who have mental health problems, and demonstrate our commitment to providing the best possible care in an environment that is fully fit for purpose.”
