Peter Hughes BA (Hons) D Arch RIBA FRSA

Design Director

Peter is the Design Director at Devereux Architects. He joined Devereux in 1991 and has worked on a range of schemes across a wide variety of sectors. His creative involvement at the inception stage of projects is invaluable and his rigorous input throughout the design programme helps to guide the architectural ethos of the practice.

Peter was also responsible for the design of Luton Airport Parkway Station, selected for the Transport by Design Exhibition at the RIBA. Peter has been directly involved in higher education projects, three at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London, three research buildings and a Centre for Neuroimaging Science. He has also produced and overseen designs for The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Papworth Hospital, Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton and The Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

Peter has been closely involved in Urban Design Planning at Devereux Architects. He has led the design of healthcare masterplans such as the significant proposals for Cambridge University Hospital at their 140 acre Addenbrooke’s campus, which received Planning Consent in 2009. The masterplan is to set the principles for the development of the hospital up to 2020. In Ghana, his design for Accra Waterfront will guide the future development of a new urban quarter, including over 700 new residencies alongside commercial, retail and leisure provision. Masterplanning projects in the Middle East drawn-up by Peter include three large developments in Abu Dhabi, including an exclusive Island project incorporating waterside villas, a health resort and a large residential masterplan that has been commissioned to accommodate the families of 4000 armed forces personnel.

In addition to using his freehand drawing skills to develop and illustrate design proposals, Peter is also a painter and has exhibited work at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, The Royal Society of Marine Artists and The New English Art Club. Peter has recently been elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts.
